United States military actions against Venezuela: Will international criminal law be enforced? An explainer

On a recent trip to Asia, President Trump talked to reporters about his authority to use United States Military forces beyond the National Guard in American cities if he thought it necessary. Professor Geoffrey Corn, a member of CERL’s Advisory Council, is quoted by Knewz discussing the president’s authority to use the military to supplement existing law enforcement entities under the Insurrection Act, which was last used by a president in President H.W. Bush’s administration.

Geoffrey S. Corn is the George R. Killam, Jr. Chair of Criminal Law and Director of the Center for Military Law and Policy at Texas Tech University School of Law. A retired U.S. Army Judge Advocate Officer, he served as the Army’s senior law of war advisor. He is also a member of the CERL Advisory Council. Read his bio here.
