Following news about U.S and Israeli plans for possible new strikes on Iran following the midterm elections, U.S. Army General (Ret.) Joseph Votel joined NPR’s Leila Fadel to discuss the future of the conflict. General Votel, a member of CERL’s Executive Board, noted that new strikes may damage Iran, but that Tehran has demonstrated an ability to rebuild and withstand damage, and that it will take a coordinated multifaceted approach––including economic and diplomatic measures in concert with military actions––to achieve key objectives related to nuclear enrichment and the Strait of Hormuz.
General Joseph L. Votel, U.S. Army (Ret.), is the former Commander of the U.S. Central Command. He is a Distinguished Military Fellow at the Middle East Institute and a member of the CERL Executive Board. Read his bio here.
