CERL’s 2023-2024 Annual Report
Highlighting the center’s efforts to preserve and promote ethics and the rule of law
The Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law (CERL) is pleased to release the 2023-24 Annual Report, detailing the many accomplishments of the center during its twelfth year of operation. In this report, we reflect on the individuals who helped advance CERL’s mission and the varied partnerships and programming that enabled us to deepen our impact.
The center is proud to have hosted several workshops and public events on topics as wide-ranging as the ethical and legal dilemmas of autonomous weapons on the battlefield, the reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, and the complexities of attempting to minimize civilian casualties in combat operations. CERL also featured expert voices in a nine-part briefing series designed to address critical questions about the application and interpretation of the law of armed conflict in the Israel-Hamas war.
“As the 2023-24 annual report shows, CERL plays a central role in charting a course on the many complex issues of the day, from the Israel-Hamas war to rule of law issues that threaten democratic governance. At a time when disinformation and partisan politics are shaping public discourse, CERL offers a balanced and reliable voice on critical ethics and legal issues in the national security context.”
